Paige, 20, is an introverted historiography student, but she’s also the university’s star basketball player and the first transfer student in nearly three decades. As much as she may want to fade into the background, she cannot. Brokenness can’t be hidden in Aimedaca, where everyone’s trauma manifests itself on their skin as literal cracks, but as a Shrouder, Paige tries to cover hers.
When her roommate's brother knocks the stacks on top of Paige, she discovers a strange book chronicling a history the university Sovereigns have tried to erase, thrusting her and her roommates into a centuries-old battle for control. The book recounts the extermination of the Gilded, a people with cracks filled with gold. In all her studies, Paige has never learned about them.
When Dismas, the Sovereign pulling the strings across Aimedaca, appears on campus with her elite military, Paige must unravel the lies before Dismas can wipe them all from history.
But who can she trust when everyone has a secret, and Dismas’s spies are closer than she knows?
